edwina hörl // hadaka no osama // toilet paper

designer clothing holds the status of being a body of creative work that is exclusive and so elusive that pieces are often unattainable. the discrepancy between this luxury status of an item of fashion, and the same object’s daily use in real life is a paradox. using toilet paper, a pre-war luxury good, as a medium/representative agent for the edwina hörl brand’s clothing, this paradox is illustrated.
the toilet paper sheets are printed with instructions on how to wrap yourself with the paper and make your own paper clothing. the toilet paper is produced for an art installation at aichi world exhibition 2005.
art and design museums in the aichi area used the toilet paper in their toilets. a guerrilla toilet paper exchange was staged on a japanese bullet train, as well.
